Gold Award / Best Show Garden at the 2003 Kent Garden Show
A five circuit classical labyrinth design featuring lavender ‘walls’ and gravel paths, complete with a central sculpture evoking The Minatour of Greek mythology.
This labyrinth design known as the ‘Goddess’ or ‘Balkan’ style has the unusual feature of a separate entrance and exit path. On the inward journey the walker traverses virtually the whole labyrinth. At the centre a separate exit path is revealed leading directly out. With tall lavender walls preventing walkers passing on the narrow path this feature enabled the many walkers who explored the labyrinth at the show to do so safely and without causing congestion.
The combination of elevated walls hiding the path from view and alternative routes through, lent this labyrinth a ‘maze-like’ quality and caused many young walkers to hesitate in confusion as they found themselves one moment close to the centre and the next far from it.
